Technical Specifications of BTO-22 Razor Wire Explained

BTO-22 is a specific classification of razor wire (not to be confused with barbed wire) defined by its geometry and aggressive deterrent capabilities. The "BTO" stands for "Concertina Razor Wire," and the number "22" refers to the approximate loop diameter (22 inches) and the number of clips per loop. This specific configuration creates a continuous, spiral-like barrier that is extremely difficult to cut or climb. Unlike standard barbed wire, which relies on sharp points, BTO-22 uses razor-sharp steel blades that are stamped in a specific pattern to maximize cutting potential upon contact.

The construction of BTO-22 involves a high-tensile steel core wire, usually galvanized to prevent rust, with sharp steel blades clipped around it. The blades are typically made of stainless steel or high-carbon steel to retain their edge. The loops are interconnected to form a concertina shape, which can be stretched out linearly or coiled concentrically. When deployed, the loops overlap, creating a redundant barrier; if an intruder cuts one loop, they are immediately faced with the sharp edge of the next. This overlapping design also allows the wire to absorb energy and spring back, making it resistant to bolt cutters and hacksaws.

In terms of dimensions, BTO-22 usually features a coil diameter of 450mm to 600mm, with blade lengths ranging from 10mm to 15mm. The spacing between the clips (the "pitch") is tight, ensuring there are no gaps large enough for tools to gain leverage. The wire is designed to be deployed at a height that prevents jumping, typically mounted on top of a fence or wall. The tensile strength of the core wire is generally around 500-700 MPa, ensuring it does not snap easily under tension or impact.

Installation of BTO-22 requires specialized tools, including tensioning bars and clips, to ensure the concertina loops are properly expanded and secured. It is often used in conjunction with other security measures, such as palisade fencing or electric sensors. Because of its lethality, safety protocols during installation are strict; installers must wear protective gloves and eye gear. The wire is usually secured with tamper-proof brackets to prevent easy removal from the outside.

Ultimately, BTO-22 razor wire is a top-tier security product used for high-risk perimeters like prisons, military bases, and border crossings. Its technical specifications are engineered to inflict maximum damage on an aggressor while providing minimum purchase for climbing tools. It serves as a psychological deterrent as much as a physical one—the visual sight of the razor blades is often enough to stop an intrusion attempt before it begins. For critical infrastructure protection, BTO-22 offers a level of security that standard fencing cannot match.
