Razor wire is a high-security steel tape with sharp, blade-like projections, used as a perimeter deterrent for critical infrastructure like power plants. It is designed to inflict serious injury on anyone attempting to climb over or through it, making it a powerful psychological and physical barrier.
There are two main types used in power plant security:
1. Razor Ribbon (Concertina Wire): This is coiled wire that can be deployed in a loose, spring-like coil on top of fences (as an outrigger) or laid flat on the ground as a perimeter barrier. It is highly difficult to navigate and slow to breach.
2. Razor Wire Mesh: This is a rigid, welded mesh panel made from razor wire, often used to reinforce existing fences or gates.
For maximum effectiveness at a power plant, razor wire is typically installed on top of high-security steel fences, often in multiple coils or with a "Y"-shaped bracket that projects the wire both upward and outward. Its installation is a specialized task, and it is almost always integrated with electronic intrusion detection systems. The presence of razor wire clearly signals a no-trespassing zone and is a key component in a multi-layered security strategy.
